About 72,000 young Brevardians attend the 108 institutions of learning – including 17 special centers and 9 charter schools – administered by Brevard Public Schools (BPS), and they have excelled as a matter of course.

Brevard Public Schools: The Numbers Tell All

  • BPS pays for, and requires, every 11th grade student to take the ACT (college readiness exam). BPS students score above state averages in all areas.
  • BPS offers authentic career readiness and dual enrollment opportunities.
  • BPS offers a comprehensive arts program; kindergarten through 12th grade.
  • Of the 31 Florida Music Demonstration schools in Florida, 23 are in Brevard County.

Excellence in Education

Newsweek and The Daily Beast named two Brevard high schools among the top 100 in the nation; Edgewood Jr./Sr. High comes in at number 48 and West Shore Jr./Sr. is ranked 80.

Based on a report conducted by the organization U.S. News & World Report, Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School is ranked 6th in the state of Florida.

Private Schools

Parents who wish to send their children to private or parochial schools also have a wide range of choices at every level, and those schools also have achieved their share of honors.

Eight Catholic elementary schools are located throughout Brevard County that serve students in Pre-K and VPK through 8 grade and one Catholic high school, Melbourne Central Catholic. Seven of the nine Catholic elementary schools are designated U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence. All schools are fully accredited by the Florida Catholic Conference.

Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy has two much-honored campuses that provide a seamless system of education for preschool through 12 grade, and Merritt Island Christian School, a ministry of the First Baptist Church of Merritt Island, continues to grow at the elementary and secondary levels. Meanwhile, Brevard Christian School, operated by Bethany Baptist Church of West Melbourne, educates students from the pre-school to high school levels, and offers many athletic programs. Calvary Chapel Academy in West Melbourne is a nonprofit, nondenominational private Christian school accredited by the Association of Christian Schools International and offers a biblically integrated curriculum.

Students also fly high at Florida Air Academy in Melbourne one of the state’s premier college preparatory military schools for students in grades 6 through 12.
